Several notable web sites and services were affected by an outage in Amazon's largest availability zone on Sunday. Amazon's elastic block store, a block level storage volume that can be attached to an Amazon EC2 virtual machine instance, experienced an outage. Customers were advised to fail over to another availability zone, but the company did not provide any updates. As a result, Hunt's existing EC2 instances were impaired, and some IO to the EBS volumes remained stuck.

In addition to affecting the EBS service, Amazon's EC2 hosting service also experienced an outage. Elastic Compute Cloud is a cloud-computing platform that provides on-demand computational processing. The outage affected a portion of its US East region. Customers that use Amazon RDS for their applications were also affected, as the service relies on Amazon EBS for data storage. The outage began at 1:41 a.m. PDT on April 21 and lasted until Monday. Unfortunately, some users' data was lost.

Customers who depend on AWS's EBS service are urged to check with their hosting provider for uptime and performance. The failure may have something to do with the new administration console of Service Health Dashboard, which runs across multiple regions. Unfortunately, this change prevented customers from updating their dashboards and services as it depends on S3 from the affected region. In the meantime, customers are encouraged to manually relocate workloads until the problem is resolved.
